Susan Dowling is a multidisciplinary freelance visual artist based in Charleston, South Carolina, known for her expertise in painting, drawing, and illustration using both traditional and digital techniques. A graduate of The School of Visual Arts in New York with a B.F.A., Susan draws inspiration from memories, life experiences, and cultural influences. Her diverse artistic perspective fuels her self-discovery and creativity, enabling her to grow continually as an artist.
Susan’s artistic process is rooted in meticulous research, beginning with reference photos, notes, and sketches to shape the composition and choice of medium. Her work often establishes a powerful emotional connection, with each medium carefully chosen to enhance engagement and interpretation. Whether employing a grayscale monochromatic palette to evoke nostalgia for a classic film, the dreamlike transparency of watercolor, or the vibrant colors of an iconic rocker or tranquil landscape, her medium significantly influences the viewer’s experience.
Originally from Long Island, New York, Susan lived in Ocean Beach, Fire Island, for several years with her husband and three children. She later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned an M.A.E. and an Ed.S. in art education. During her teaching career, she earned accolades such as Teacher of the Year and High School Art Educator of the Year. Today, she works from her Charleston, South Carolina studio, continuing to create compelling works of art.
